Game Comments:

For the 2nd year in a row, SSFAC opened it's season at home with a rainy, windy day to make conditions difficult, but as they did last season, they came up with a victory turning back Los Banos Futbol Club 4-2 in their inaugural game in the Pacific Premier Division of the SWPL. The match got off to a sloppy start as both sides tried to get a feel for each other and find a way to control the game. South City struck first as Greg Hui scored off a nice assist from Kian Katanforoosh. The boys found the scoreboard again just eight minutes later as Miguel Franco was taken down in the area, leading to a Penalty Kick which was converted by Martin Wright to put SSF up by 2-0.

Los Banos wasn't about to go away quietly as they answered back in the 41st minute to cut the lead to one, but South City responded immediately as Carlos Ballesteros set up Brendan Cadam for a great finish to give SSF a 3-1 lead at the half.

SSF seemingly put the game out of reach early in half number two as Ballesteros notched his first goal of the season off a nice feed from Greg make it 4-1. However the game took a dramatic turn after that. Martin Wright picked up his second yellow card in the 58th minute earning him a send off and reducing the team to 10 players. Just 5 minutes later, Kian Katanforoosh found himself in the same fate as he also picked up his second yellow and a send off leaving the team with just 9 players to find a way to close out the remaining 27 minutes.

It was now time for some key players to step up and they responded to preserve the win even though Los Banos struck for a late goal in the 80th minute to make it a 4-2 match. Miguel Franco who was having a great day at center mid, dropped back to a center back position to help maintain control and took charge in leading the defense. Anthony Long came on at left back and prevented attacks from Los Banos, while Karan Warrier & Varun Sood took charge of the midfield with some good link up play and strong attacks going forward to create chances for SSF even though they were shorthanded. Sully Donohue also showed what a nice addition he is to the team as he gave a solid performance and showed poise and control with the ball and tremedous vision getting open when without the ball. Overall it was a very good effort from the boys as they had their first taste of competition in the very competitive SWPL. Adrian Monroy came up with his 1st win in the goal as he made numerous big saves to keep Los Banos at bay.

Adrian Monroy with another big stop !!

Next up for the team is a trip to Half Moon Bay to take on an old foe in Deportivo Cometa on Sunday, September 25th at Cunha School with kickoff set for 2:00pm
