In a game they knew they had to have, SSFAC overcame a shorthanded lineup due to injuries and players not available to manage a 5-1 victory over Modesto City FC. It was their 2nd straight win over MCFC as they had also picked up a result in Modesto last week, but it didn't come that easy. SSF began the match with a newly signed backup goalkeeper as their number 1 man in the nets, Adrian Monroy is recovering from a hamstring injury. Dean Gardiner stepped up and was solid in goal as MCFC only managed to collect one tally on the day.
SSF got on the board first as Greg Hui was fouled in the area, and the teams penalty kick specialist, Martin Wright converted to give the team a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. That would be the halftime score, but things changed quickly in the 2nd half. Sam Nadell scored his first of two goals on the day, and Hui converted off a turnover by the Modesto keeper to increase the lead to 3-0 just 10 minutes into the back half, but Modesto answered right back scoring just a minute later to cut the lead to 3-1
SSF wasn't about to let them back into the match however as the defense played an excellent game, led by Wright, Kevin Ma, Bob Weger, and Sully Donohue. Nadell scored again with a header from a terrific cross from Aidan Durgerian, and then Durgerian put the final stamp on the win as he collected a perfect through ball from Hui and slotted it home for the 5-1 final.
South City now has a week off to rest up and heal before they prepare for their final 2 games of the season, both on the road. First up is a contest with Bay Area United who sport a record of 8 wins, 4 ties, and only 1 loss. BAU is in great position to possibly win the league as they have played the fewest games thus far of the contending teams, so a SSF victory would loom large in the overall picture.
