SSFAC returned to their home field on Sunday and celebrated with a 7-0 victory over Grasshoppers in what was a total team effort. South City dominated a Grasshoppers side that is going through some transition and hasn't found its stride yet. Captain Bobby Quinlan opened the scoring at 23 mins with assists from Antony Reyes & Fabio Marques. Soon thereafter SSF struck again as a perfectly placed corner kick from Leandro Monteiro found Scott Ellis at the far post where he headed it home for a 2-0 halftime lead. Having been in this position before, SSF knew it had to continue to play hard. "I think past experiences help fuel us in the 2nd half," stated forward Ryan Wiegmann. "In past seasons we had games slip away from us after leading at the half by a decent margin. We knew we couldn't get complacent and let up on our intensity. Once the half began, we dictated the pace till the end which allowed us to play South City soccer. We began using the entire field and picked our spots to attack." The 2nd half began with just that type of energy as Antony Reyes found the net in minute 51, followed by 2 strikes from Marques, and one each from Jonathan Wong & Andrew Pantano. The defense lead by Ellis, Ever Alvarez, Ian Preikschat, & Harry Andreades never let Grasshoppers mount any serious attack, closing down the pitch with the help of the midfielders. "We won the game with constant pressure & great ball possesion. We forced turnovers and then displayed an excellent passing game that exploited the open space and led to numerous scoring chances" added Wiegmann. "We've looked storng thru 2 games, but there is much work to be done. The team chemistry is starting to gel and it is encouraging to see us coming together this early in the season. We have a chip on our shoulder knowing we wasted winnable games early last year". SSFAC now takes to the road again as they face Santa Clara Rovers AC next week. The key to keeping the team focused moving forward according to Wiegmann is "to live in the moment game to game, we can't focus on what we've done in the past and we can't overlook any team in this league. We must deal with the task at hand and work together as a team, knowing that at the end of the day the only stat that counts is the WIN." Sounds like a good plan.
