Game Comments:

It took longer than expected, but SSFAC finally found the win column Sunday as they they came back from being down 1-0 at halftime to record a 3-1 victory over Club Sport Maritimo. Maritimo tallied first when their midfield player carried the ball into a open space and ripped a shot from about 20 yards out at the 15 minute mark. The match remained close throughout the rest of the half as South City controlled the midfield play. Just 5 minutes into the second half, Kevin Steiger was pulled down inside the penalty area drawing a foul. The ensuing penalty kick was converted by Steiger to bring the team level. Steiger continued to put pressure on the Maritimo defense as he weaved his way through the back line in his attempts to put shots on goal. He was again rewarded for his efforts when a Maritimo defender tripped him inside the penalty area to draw another penalty kick. This one was taken by Leandro Monteiro and he calmly place it home to give the team a 2-1 lead. Maritimo was only able to take 2 shots in the second half as the defense completely shut them down. Strong play from Paul Pavich, Scott Ellis, Reuben Wartens, Andrew Crowe, Roberto Miranda and goalkeeper Adrian Monroy frustrated Maritimo as they could not penetrate the SSF end of the field. At the same time, South City completely took over the play in midfield as Bobby Quinlan, Gareth Lea, Stephen Shaw Smith, Monteiro & at times Andrew Crowe, gave Maritimo nothing as they dominated possession. Adam Dhanens close out the scoring when he took a perfect pass from Monteiro and slotted home the 3rd goal with seven minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. Andrew Elliott who paired up with Dhanens, had another brilliant game as he put constant pressure on the Maritimo defense and forced many errors with his speed and ability to win the ball for his team. SSF now looks ahead to their next match when they face PCC at Aragon High School in San Mateo
