SSFAC's "Hall Of Stars" 1954 - 2025Submitted by Mike on Sat, 2025-05-24 11:27 |
South San Francisco A.C. men's soccer team has a long and memorable history dating back to its initial season of 1954. Through the years there have been so many amazing players to wear the SSFAC jersey. The team can be defined into two distinct eras. The first, chronicled the early days of the club, from 1954-1983, when
Founder and Head Coach Alvaro Bettucchi guided a young team and molded them into a very competitive group as they competed in the Peninsula Soccer League. Sunday's at Orange Memorial Park in SSF became the place to be and you didn't want to miss seeing some of the best soccer in San Mateo County.
The next phase of the team, (1984 - Present Day) began after the 1983 season when Coach Bettucchi retired and handed over the reigns to Mike Pizzo who assembled a new roster primarily made up of players who were with him in the AYSO youth program. After a few years of growing pains and tough competition, SSFAC began to find its way. They slowly climbed up the standings of the PSL during the 90's, and continuing over the next 20 seasons, eventually winning the Majors Division in 2022, which came a few seasons after Pizzo retired from Coaching, but he remained with the team as its president.
As the team begins preparation for it's 72nd season of representing the City of South San Francisco, and now competing in the Southwest Premier League, it is only fitting that we recognize some of the legendary players that made Sunday's so special in our community.
The website currently showcases a few honors such as the "Best Eleven" and "Teams of the Decades", but those focus on the time period from 1984-2025 when match statistics, game results, game recaps and summaries were kept and readily available. Unfortunately, not very much was documented or recorded from the early days of the club as it certainly was a different time with just a few newspaper clippings to go by. Now the time has come to truly honor the complete history of South San Francisco Athletic Club as we recognize players from both eras and the contributions they made to one of the most respected clubs in the Bay Area. Thanks to the teams founder and original Coach, Alvaro Bettucchi, we are able to include those original players of the past and include them in the long history of this club. Besides recognizing players who were considered the "Best Eleven" we highlight players of both eras who great teammates, unsung heroes, and were just as special off the field as they were on it. The type of player you'd want on your team !!
Starting with a group of players from the original beginnings of SSFAC to a group of players from the next generation, we will continue to add more players from the present day each year prior to the start of a new season as we build the "Hall of Stars"....showcasing the players that made SSFAC, What it was,... What it is,... and What it continues to be.....One of the Best.
